Chicky’s cough just won’t go away; mom Shai is concerned
PRAY FOR: Chicky, 10 yo. Chronic cough. Lord Jesus You know how disturbing this cough is for Chicky and mom Shai. We ask that You would be gracious to heal Chicky’s lungs completely. Please calm her coughing. Help mom Shai to find ways to soothe Chicky’s body to quiet the cough. Give her the wisdom that comes from You alone as You impart it to Your people. I just really need her to get better and I don’t know what else to do except pray…?

Why was she on doxycycline and how long has it been since she’s been off?

She was on it for the respiratory problem
She’s been off over a month
She was further prescribed codeine and prednisolone which did not help in any way

Oh dear part of the problem could be that that’s a whole lot of medication for a Little girl. Did she have pneumonia or bronchitis?

No it’s a dry hacking cough
Sometimes she wretches like if she bringing up something from her airway but nothing comes up
Like a gag Additional info posted by Shai Ali 1-18-20: She saw two different.vets and did heartworm test CBC and Bio chem also x rays…there were no lung sounds, no enlargement of heart muscle, no heartworm, no tracheal collapse…only finding was elevated liver enzymes which could be due to the use of doxycycline and her final diagnosis was sterile bronchitis…

Here are some things that may be helpful: a cool mist humidifier air that is too dry can cause coughing. Essential oils like Eucalyptus can be helpful for larger dogs; proceed with caution (see list of oils to avoid below*) with all breeds as they can be very sensitive. If you use any herbal product proceed with caution, using tiny amounts to diffuse into the air and carrier oils for topical products. Licorice root tea or extract drops can be mixed with raw honey and used as an effective natural cough syrup. One of our community members swears by this natural homeopathic formula. Also, always use a harness with small dogs especially; they are prone to a collapsing trachea.
Anita Chaplin, certified Canine Nutritionist: …a cool mist humidifier is a safe bet, no need to add any essential oils. Giving the dog 1 tsp. honey (for a [toy] dog) 3 times a day, or mixing 1 tsp. with food (for every meal). If the dog will not take the honey you can mix it with some warm water and give orally with a syringe (needle removed, of course) I like raw Manuka honey, it has the highest antibacterial properties of any honey. It’s not cheap, but worth the price. Anticipate a week or two for the dog’s cough to heal. Any signs of issues breathing or lowered stamina, contact your veterinarian.

Remove any collar from around the dog’s neck, this makes breathing easier.
I haven’t used Vick’s for several decades. I do not like that it’s petroleum based, and it does contain camphor, which could be harmful when used around dogs. Better safe than sorry.
For my own use, I make a beeswax based herbal vapors, works better than Vick’s. Hope this helps. ?
For asthma, bronchitis or pneumonia
This manual treatment called coupage or percussion can help when a cough is accompanied by lung congestion. With pneumonia, a Vet can prescribe Albuterol and nebulization to help bring mucus out of the lungs. This is a nebulizer, tubing. A mask is necessary for use with a pet.
