Oscar, post bladder surgery; survived a year of urinary blockages

UPDATE/PRAY FOR: Oscar, 5 yo. Post Op Urethrostomy. Lord Jesus we thank You that Oscar is doing well after this complicated bladder/neuter surgery. The 1st days were brutal and we thank You for helping mom Phyllis through that ordeal. We ask that You would continue to heal to hole left in Oscar’s perineum. Keep him free from infection. Help mom Phyllis to keep him clean. Thank You for Your mercy on this family as they pull together to help Oscar to function and enjoy life. In the Name of El Channun, God is Gracious. Amen. <3 Caren

Is he unable to eat on his own? He is SO adorable! People continue to pray for him. It’s astounding to me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post continue to draw this much attention over such a long period of time. 💗🙏 Caren

Lol, OK. I guess if you are willing to do it so will he be willing to take it that way! I’m glad he’s doing well. Does the vet think he’s out of the and turns of post-surgical complications?

Hoping so, we’re due to get sutures out on Friday wound is a bloody mess pardon language, but he’s peeing well & bleeding less each day 🤞🙏

Please send a picture of it. His urinary tract was diverted, right? Is it a tube? Sorry to be a pest, I’m just curious to understand what you will be dealing with on a permanent basis.

It’s still a bit raw & he’s not too keen if we pay any attention to that area just imagine an area below the penis that is open no tubes it bypass the usual route

Oh, OK. So nothing foreign is there, they just made an opening in a different place? And they expect 100% healing will keep it clean?

Yep it’s a challenge to keep clean needs cleaning everytime they pass urine I think it’s painless once it has healed he was also neutered at the same time I think that’s given him more annoyance he’s getting stitches out on Friday 🤞

I guess it makes sense for the stitches to stay in extra long, but it must bother him. Is he wearing an E collar when he is not eating?

No he’s very good I have doggy diaper on him & so far he hasn’t been able to get to the area wears his collar when he goes to the toilet as I have to remove the diaper

Great! I’m getting ready to put together an update on him. This could be very instructional for those who see it. We never talked about what necessitated the surgery, I assume it was bladder stones?

Not in this case you are right it usually is, Oscar was unable to pass urine this time last year, he was growing struvite crystals in his urine which caused a blockage he didn’t have stones, the vet managed to unblock his urethera & we avoided surgery, his condition is managed with special dog food that stops the crystals from forming, all fairly well until a few weeks ago when the blockage reoccured, despite several interventions including catherization he was deemed to have uretheral spasm surgery only option 😭 sorry it’s taken so long to write this it’s complicated 😬

Oh my, thank you so much for clarifying! And thank you for taking the time and effort to write this out. People will find this very instructional I’m sure. We’ve had dogs with struvite crystals, but none that weren’t mediated by dietary changes. This will help people to understand that this might happen. It’s very valuable information. The food changes the Ph of the urine thereby reducing the formation of the crystals
